What this test screens for

Understanding the Lipid Panel (Cholesterol)

The lipid panel — also called a cholesterol test — measures total cholesterol, HDL ("good"), LDL ("bad"), and triglycerides in your blood. It is one of the most-ordered blood tests in primary care and the cornerstone of cardiovascular risk assessment.

Walk in any day during open hours for a $59 lipid panel. No referral needed; doctor’s order is included. Results post to your secure online portal within 24 to 72 hours — you can print them, share them with any provider, or compare them to previous years to track trends.

Pair the lipid panel with an A1C ($59) for diabetes risk, or upgrade to the Comprehensive Wellness Panel ($279) which includes lipid, A1C, CBC, CMP, thyroid, vitamin D, iron, and key hormones in a single draw.

Why people get this test

  • Annual cardiovascular risk screening for adults 20 and older
  • Tracking progress on cholesterol-lowering medication or diet changes
  • Family history of heart disease, stroke, or high cholesterol
  • Baseline before starting hormone therapy or weight-loss medication
  • Athletic, weight-training, or biohacking optimization tracking
  • Pre-employment physical or insurance-required testing

What to expect

From check-in to results — what your visit looks like

Most visits take under 15 minutes. Here’s the full arc, start to finish.

1

How to prepare

Fasting is recommended for the most accurate result — 8 to 12 hours with only plain water beforehand. Coffee with cream, juice, food, and morning medications that include sugar can elevate triglycerides. Black coffee is acceptable for most clients. If fasting is impractical, a non-fasting lipid panel is still useful for total cholesterol and HDL but triglyceride and calculated LDL accuracy may be reduced.

2

During your visit

A single small blood draw — usually one or two tubes. The phlebotomist will look for the easiest vein, typically in the inner elbow. Most clients are in and out in under 10 minutes from check-in to walking out.

3

Getting your results

Results post to your secure online portal within 24 to 72 hours. The report includes total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, and most labs also calculate non-HDL cholesterol and HDL/total ratio. We can fax results to any provider you name at no charge.

FAQ

Lipid Panel (Cholesterol) — what people ask

Specific questions about the lipid panel (cholesterol). For anything not covered, call 571-500-7030.

Do I really have to fast 12 hours before a lipid panel?

8 to 12 hours is recommended for the most accurate triglyceride and LDL values. Many modern labs and physicians now accept non-fasting lipid panels because total cholesterol and HDL are minimally affected by recent food. If you cannot fast, come in anyway — the result still gives useful information.

What is a "good" cholesterol number?

General guidelines: total cholesterol under 200, HDL above 40 for men and 50 for women, LDL under 100 for most adults, triglycerides under 150. These are general targets — actual goals depend on age, family history, and other cardiovascular risk factors. Discuss your specific numbers with a primary-care provider.

How often should I get a lipid panel?

For adults with normal levels and no cardiovascular risk factors, every 4 to 6 years is typical. For adults with elevated LDL, family history of heart disease, diabetes, or on cholesterol-lowering medication, annual (or more frequent) testing is common — discuss frequency with your physician.
