Understanding the Legal (Court-Admissible) Paternity
A legal paternity DNA test produces a court-admissible result through strict chain-of-custody collection. The science is the same as a peace-of-mind paternity test; the difference is procedural — identity is verified at the visit, samples are sealed in your presence, custody is tracked from collection to lab, and the lab returns results with a signed affidavit suitable for court submission. Required for child support, custody disputes, immigration cases, and most other matters where the result will be entered as evidence.
At our Chantilly lab, a legal paternity test is $369 and uses a simple cheek-swab collection. Each adult participant presents government-issued photo ID; the custodial parent consents on behalf of minor children. Results are typically ready in 3 to 5 business days after the lab receives all samples.
Bring any documents the requesting party issued (court order, attorney letter, immigration paperwork). We will not accept samples collected at home for legal use — chain-of-custody must begin at our office. If you previously ordered an at-home paternity test and now need a legal result, the test must be redone under chain-of-custody.
Why people get this test
- Court-ordered paternity, child support, or custody proceedings
- Immigration sponsorship or visa applications that require DNA evidence
- Estate, inheritance, or probate disputes when documentary evidence is insufficient
- Adoption or surrogacy cases that require biological-relationship documentation
- Cases where the alleged father, mother, or child needs a legally usable result
What to expect
From check-in to results — what your visit looks like
Most visits take under 15 minutes. Here’s the full arc, start to finish.
How to prepare
Avoid eating, drinking, smoking, or brushing teeth for 30 minutes before the cheek swab so the sample is not diluted. All adult participants bring photo ID. Custodial parent must be present to consent for minor children. Bring any court orders, attorney letters, or immigration paperwork.
During your visit
Each participant is checked in separately. A trained collector verifies ID, photographs each adult, and swabs the inside of each cheek for about 30 seconds. Samples are sealed and packaged in your presence and tracked with a numbered chain-of-custody form. Typical visit time for a family group is 20 to 30 minutes.
Getting your results
Results are typically ready in 3 to 5 business days after the lab receives all samples. The lab returns a signed report with the calculated probability of paternity (typically 99.9% or higher for inclusion; 0% for exclusion) and the underlying genetic-marker comparisons. The signed affidavit is suitable for submission to court or to the requesting authority.

FAQ
Legal (Court-Admissible) Paternity Test — what people ask
Specific questions about the legal (court-admissible) paternity test. For anything not covered, call 571-500-7030.
Who must be present for a legal paternity test?
At minimum, the alleged father and the child. Including the mother strengthens statistical certainty but is not strictly required. The custodial parent must be present to consent for minor children. All adults present must show government-issued photo ID.
Can I use an at-home paternity test for court?
No. At-home paternity tests cannot be used in court or immigration cases because identity is not verified at collection. If you may eventually need the result for legal use, choose the legal test from the start — the chain-of-custody must be in place from collection forward.
How long does the legal paternity report take?
Typically 3 to 5 business days after the lab receives all samples. The processing time is the same as a peace-of-mind test; the procedural overhead (ID verification, chain-of-custody, signed affidavit) happens at collection, not at the lab.
