What this test screens for

Understanding the Hair Follicle Drug

A hair follicle drug test screens for substance use over an approximately 90-day window — the longest detection range of any common drug screen. As the hair grows from the follicle, each strand records exposure to drugs and their metabolites. A standard 1.5-inch sample, clipped from the back of the head, covers roughly the prior three months.

Hair follicle testing is preferred in situations where urine testing is too easy to time around. Child-custody proceedings, probation monitoring, court-ordered abstinence programs, and many pre-employment screens for safety-critical roles all default to hair testing for this reason. Employers requesting a 5-, 10-, or 12-panel hair test get the same substance coverage as a urine panel — just with a 90-day look-back instead of 2 to 30 days.

At our Chantilly lab, a hair follicle drug test is $169, payable at the visit by cash, credit, debit, HSA, or FSA card. If head hair is unavailable (recently shaved, or insufficient length), body hair can be substituted; for clients with neither, fingernail testing extends the window even further (3 to 6 months). Results take 3 to 5 business days because hair samples require additional extraction and processing at the reference lab.

Why people get this test

  • Child-custody hearings where short-term sobriety is not enough proof
  • Probation and court-ordered abstinence monitoring programs
  • Pre-employment screening for safety-critical or executive roles
  • Recovery program intake when documenting longer abstinence matters
  • Family decisions where 90-day historical use is more informative than urine
  • Cases where a recent negative urine could mask older or chronic use

What to expect

From check-in to results — what your visit looks like

Most visits take under 15 minutes. Here’s the full arc, start to finish.

1

How to prepare

No fasting and no medication changes. Wash your hair normally — shampoos, conditioners, and hair products do not affect the test. Avoid bleaching or extreme chemical treatments in the days before collection if possible (the lab can still process treated hair but extreme processing can affect detection sensitivity). Bring photo ID and any chain-of-custody form your employer, court, or program issued.

2

During your visit

A trained collector clips a small bundle of hair (about 100 strands, slightly thicker than a pencil lead) from the back of the head, as close to the scalp as possible. The cut is barely visible and takes about 5 minutes. The sample is sealed and packaged in your presence following chain-of-custody procedures, then shipped under tracked custody to our certified reference lab.

3

Getting your results

Hair follicle results return in 3 to 5 business days. Any non-negative is automatically confirmed by GC/MS or LC/MS testing at no additional charge. Results are reviewed by a Medical Review Officer (MRO) who reconciles any non-negative against documented prescriptions before reporting. We can fax results to employers, attorneys, courts, or treatment programs at no additional cost.

Confidential

Your results never go through your insurance carrier.

Transparent

Price you see is price you pay.

Fast

Most results in 24–72 hours through our portal.

Doctor’s order

Included as part of every visit. No referral needed.

FAQ

Hair Follicle Drug Test — what people ask

Specific questions about the hair follicle drug test. For anything not covered, call 571-500-7030.

How is a 90-day hair follicle drug test more accurate than urine?

Hair testing detects metabolites that have been incorporated into the hair shaft as it grew — meaning you cannot time abstinence to pass it the way you sometimes can with urine. It is also harder to dilute or substitute. The trade-off is that hair testing does not detect very recent use (within roughly 5 to 7 days of the test, before the hair has emerged from the follicle).

Can shampoos or hair products affect a hair follicle drug test?

Normal shampoos, conditioners, and styling products do not affect results. The lab extracts metabolites from inside the hair shaft, not just the surface. Detox shampoos sold online have no clinically demonstrated effect on hair drug testing.

What if I do not have enough head hair for the test?

Body hair (chest, arm, leg) can be substituted — the detection window may differ slightly because body hair grows more slowly. For clients with insufficient hair anywhere, fingernail drug testing covers a 3-to-6-month detection window and is a valid alternative.
